What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a component of traditional Chinese medicine in which precise zones of the skin are stimulated by the insertion of needles. Acupuncture originated in China around 100 BC and has been traditionally practiced in Asian countries like India, China, Korea an Japan. However, recent interest and understanding of this technique in the Western world have favoured its adoption worldwide. Acupuncture is primarily used to alleviate pain, but acupuncturists recommend it for many other conditions, including migraines, arthritis pain, nausea, depression and sleep disorders.

As with other alternative treatments, acupuncture is best used as a complement to conventional medicine. For example, acupuncture may help reduce the adverse effects of certain cancer treatments like chemotherapy. Finally, adopting healthy lifestyle habits, in addition to undergoing acupuncture therapy, may help improve its effectiveness.
